It is the most advanced out of this list of programs, and is the only one with audio capabilities. Since I have not used it personally, I would recommend looking up one of the many walkthroughs available online. Open Toonz is the official opensource animation tool of Studio Ghibli, and has very complex features. Just make sure to export the sequence as PNG for it to work. Krita can also export frames in many formats, and the AlpacaDouga GIF maker works with Krita as well. Krita can import frames! This means if you make an animation in a different program, you can import all the frames into Krita. Krita has a TON of features, so I would suggest looking at the site manual to help you figure out how it works. It now has an animation timeline and onion skin features, and is capable of making multi-layer animations. Krita is on par with Photoshop, with many brush engines and layer modes made specifically for drawing. Go on their website to use their AlpacaDouga GIF maker to make your animation into a GIF. It also has basic onion skinning.įireAlpaca cannot import frames, but it can export a sequence of frames. You can only use multiple layers by using the layer group function. Pencil2D is buggy and still in development, so it gets an honorable mention.įireAlpaca is an incredibly lightweight program that works smoothly on the slowest computers, and its animation feature is no different. While the format will handle larger dimensions, even newer computers can sometimes have trouble smoothly playing GIFs that are too big.Essentially, there are three good animation programs: FireAlpaca, Krita, and Open Toonz. GIF images were originally designed to work on a small part of older low-resolution screens. An animated GIF is not a valid alternative to a HD movie. My personal rule of thumb: if you are using anything more than 500 pixels wide, you are probably using images bigger than the GIF format was designed to support, and you should be using a real video format (AVI, MOV, MP4, WMV) and a video editor instead to combine your frame images. While your problem might be different, I have only seen that problem so far when very large images are used. This blog and its readers are only fellow artists, we have no official connection to FireAlpaca or AlpacaDouga. I barely put 8 frames into the slot then it freezes for a long time, and crashes.
